Heyyyy y'all!

I'm baaaack, and this time I'm back with a familiar guest - Bussy B!

As Detty December approaches, Busayo and I sit down to reminisce our experience(s) of going back to Nigeria during Christmas (for me) and Summer (for her). I went back home in December 2022 to see my family and attend my sister's wedding while she went back in July 2023 to obtain her H-1B/American work visa, and also spend time with her family.

We share some tips to prepare for the sweet (and somewhat sour) experience of going back home, and air some dirty laundry about what it's like living with your parents again, haha!

It's all love, laughter and banter and we hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed recording!

Speaker 1:

Keep roasting me on the podcast channel.

Speaker 2:

I'm not roasting you what's your message?

Speaker 1:

Why are you not calling me?

Speaker 2:

Nothing. You've been busy. I talked about you last to you, but I don't know your schedules, your office.

Speaker 1:

I saw that you were going to work, because that's the thing you should not be judging my Instagram story by my real life.

Speaker 2:

You should text me, so I said yes to that. I talked about you, but I don't know your distance.

Speaker 1:

Yes, text me if you think about me. Text me like I text you. But thank you, I appreciate that you texted me and thank you so much for coming to see me today. I appreciate it. Hi guys, welcome back. Welcome back to another episode of Learning Regrets today. Thank you so much for always listening. On today's episode, we're going to be talking about travelling back home to renew your H1B visa. For as many of us who are now in the stages of relinquishing our F1 student visa to get in work visa and with me here I have Busy- B.

Speaker 2:

Hey guys, this is Busy B here.

Speaker 1:

Yes, and let's jump right in. Ask about me on the streets of Ithaca. They will tell you I'm popular everywhere. I mean, I'm the new Nenira girl who just came here and has friends in all sects and factions of this university MBA graduate students, undergraduate students, phd students. Like girl, I'm popular, but you're welcome to the Nenira student podcast. This is podcast where, if I can do it, you can do it too, hi guys, okay, we're back now and before we jump right into it, like I said before, oh, my god, I need to stop saying that.

Speaker 1:

Anyway, yes, the last episode was the Out of Office episode with my coppery girlies we're at Mexico. We're in Mexico for a wedding and we shared our experiences on why we're still single and what we hope to get out of dating in our late 20s, early 30s and hopefully getting married someday. But today we're bringing it back to our immigration journeys and Busy B has decided to share with me and with you I'm going to hear some of these things for the first time what her experience was like going back home to renew her H1B visa. And both of us are from Nigeria. We live in Lagos, nigeria. And, yeah, busy, introduce yourself. Hey guys.

Speaker 2:

I've been here before, but yeah, I'm Busy. Yo, I am a business analyst and I work for New York City Employees Retirement System. Per Per, how long?

Speaker 1:

have you been?

Speaker 2:

doing that now. I've been working for almost two years I think about 20 months, yeah.

Speaker 1:

I think you got your job. I got my job, no.

Speaker 2:

I got my first job March 28th.

Speaker 1:

Oh, okay, okay, yeah, march 28th, yeah, yeah, yeah, I remember that. And the other one April 18th. Yes, and they came to see me in the car, thank you. Shout out to you and Per. Shout out to Perl. Yes, okay, yeah, thanks for introducing yourself. Busy, and she has been here before, actually, but the last episode we had was a very deep episode. It was called the struggles of not having guys to do it.

Speaker 1:

I won't have to take down the episode, because there was a lot that was going on there Because we talked about it. I had to. I was like I don't want USCIS issues, but I think a lot of people actually I remember people raising it in a way, because it was part one, part two, like we talked about how we had to fend for ourselves. I mean, then I was almost saying it was you and Ladi. I shout out to you too, ladi, our mom of one, who is also doing very well on her cosmetic science job in Boston. We love you. We see all the products that you're launching. I'm so proud of you. Shout out to you what was I talking about now? Your job.

Speaker 2:

And how you got it.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, you've been here before. Exactly. Tell us for those that knew, please tell them how we met.

Speaker 2:

Tula and I met in 2013. We attended the same university, covenant University, and we were costumates and also very roommates in first semester it was second semester, I think, but we were costumates for the first semester and in second semester we became roommates and we became close and now our bestest is for life. Yeah, I'm 6cm my best.

Speaker 1:

Yes, I out. I was looking for your trouble. I thought you would not have solved me. No, even though this is our best time taking time off and on. It's hard to stay. Yes, please, exactly. I also have to add Boussayo. I need to admit that you broke my laptop in 100 levels.

Speaker 2:

I will never forgive you. I'm actually never going to be on your podcast. You still care about this thing.

Speaker 1:

I need you to admit that you broke my laptop. I don't know why you can't just admit it. She's so surprised. Boussayo, that's how we met, no we met. We met in Covenant. We were doing KM Cangellery together and you went to Ola Shurei High School International. Let me tell you my own impression about Boussayo Before I go into how she broke my laptop. Boussayo used to wear nice shirts in class. Remember how we in Covenant we had to dress corporately and we used to wear Harry's and Curtis and.

Speaker 1:

I was like why this rich kid she would like, did you take handbags? And you had nice dresses too, for class and me, I think. Then I see it's where my old clothes come from, Because I graduated school July in 2013 and we started at Covenant August 7th 2013 and then I was like, who is this girl? And they used to do makeup. So Boussayo is actually the first person we ever introduced into makeup. I used to come and borrow your lip pencil that time and your red lipstick, your ruby move. I didn't know what you said, that we looked alike. So that was actually how we became friends and then we also became. We were close for the first two years, but see what I don't have on that you not left me.

Speaker 2:

OMG, I'm going to say it's because of a man. But you know you left me you were moving with up for real and face.

Speaker 1:

Oh, now we're calling names. Wow, Okay, are you two? You were moving with Sarah and Kandie and she want me to say no, let's give receipt to everybody.

Speaker 2:

I only became close to Sarah and Kandie in 400 levels. Okay, okay, okay.

Speaker 1:

And I was still in the shoes of me. Yes, you were, but it's just there because of man. Was that to self-righteous that time? I know you. You put me to have your man in my life then, Not that you were moving.

Speaker 2:

You had other friends. And like you were busy with chaplain seaboard, all that, and then I started taking off with untraasure, I became treasured in 200 levels and all those things.

Speaker 1:

But anyway, the friendship has been tried and tested and we're still here 7 years later.

Speaker 2:

What am I saying 10 years later?

Speaker 1:

True, we have really survived these times of life. And here back to my laptop. I will not forget. There will now be roommates in second semester, omega semester, like we say in the Convenant University. Be Alpha semester, omega semester.

Speaker 2:

No, Omega, Omega.

Speaker 1:

When did you say Omega, alpha and Omega too? No, okay, yeah, that's true, alpha is best semester. Oh, I'm sorry, so we can remember my students. Oh, is that just us? No, what is this Bush lab? Okay, then it looked. It became romantic in second semester, omega semester. And then you want the up bunk or down bunk. Now I walk, I slept late, I put my. So people on the up bunk. They usually use the chairs attached to our tables to climb to their bunk. That's correct.

Speaker 1:

I think no way. It was on the chair. I slept up and I left on it. It was on the chair, on the floor. I can't remember, but I know that you, you must have jumped down and you and you stepped on the face of the laptop. It was short and I walk, I know that that laptop in fall from my bed. I already closed it. No, it was closed. Well, I think when you came now you jumped, it hit it. You like you stepped on the laptop. But anyways, it might also be my fault for not keeping it properly under the locker under the bed. But I remember that day I had to cry to not look how to fix my screen. I went to csc build. I think they collected 20k from my hand that time. How much was my pocket money?

Speaker 2:

You borrowed money from your mom.

Speaker 1:

Why would I not borrow? So are you still me doing all of those? It's not after you told me, no, it's okay.

Speaker 2:

I did not even know what I was going on with the whole laptop, because I was. I think I slept in this person's room. I slept in serum candies room.

Speaker 1:

No, this one.

Speaker 2:

I slept. I was no yeah, because I did not know. I think someone came to meet me.

Speaker 1:

I said I all I and Sarah were roommates.

Speaker 2:

I was in their room.

Speaker 1:

Anyway, it's okay. It's okay If that was meant to break on the show. Do not break over. See you today. So I think I forgive you. Shower is okay. No, I'll la anyway. So just brief recap for those that knew. Here was your journey coming to the us. Just brief recap. Why did you decide to come to the us? What did you do for your master's or g?

Speaker 2:

study, um, so I came to the us in January 2020. Um, for my master's in environmental engineering. Well, it was my mom that's actually pushed me To pursue my master's, because I don't think I was too. I think I was. I think all the beats on serious In breast and I don't not like I was on serious I mean I knew yeah, but I don't think I was so Um ambitious.

Speaker 2:

So, ambitious like the most of you guys, but my mom, after we graduated, she didn't want me to just be home Before NYSE, so she told me, she told me to write gary and tofu and I did all those I think for to find had 90 over 120. I think I had 117 for that one. Mm-hmm, what's your one?

Speaker 1:

No, that's what the hell? Or one or seven. I wasn't at the higher and higher.

Speaker 2:

But well, yes. So I came for my master's and I completed that within 18 months. And well, it took me a while to get a job. So I started, I enrolled in a business analysis training and after I completed training, I got a job as a business analyst and I've been working, um, as a business analyst in the US. Yeah, congrats. So. So I switched From environmental engineer, which I studied, to business analysis.

Speaker 1:

Yes as this thing. And then, how did you so? Now, coming to your h1b, how did you apply for your? Do you get the stem, even as a business analyst?

Speaker 2:

Oh yeah, I got stem Okay, stem opiates. I think I used it for a month before my, before my h1b got Finally approved, or like before I got my h1b card.

Speaker 1:

Oh, so you didn't complete your two years stem opiates? No, I only used them one. I told my company I wanted to complete mine and that I mean they'll still file for the h1b, but that when you, when I get it, I don't want it to automatically change. If I get it, then I want it to change only when I go back to my home country to get it. So I think there's a protein, partially that if you actually want to use up your stem opiates so that you can buy time and have your full two years stem opiates to yourself, there are two ways to change it, but you should confirm it.

Speaker 2:

But what are the advantages of doing that? Doesn't that just delay your process of getting on the h1b and then like green card, or it doesn't probably delay?

Speaker 1:

the green card too. But me I already I already thought it would take us long anyway.

Speaker 1:

So I think it's called instant. I can't remember the right word either. Consular, oh god. There's one called change of status, the immediate end of stutter. The second one called something consular. So I chose the consular option, where I I only want my status to change when I go back to Nigeria and when I have to come back, I have to come back on h1b than for it to immediately change. So, but I think that's what you did. So how many times did they? How did you go into the lottery before you got?

Speaker 2:

your h1b. I just the first time I did is I got, I got selected. So my company applied. I did not even know the exact exact time they applied, but I know it was just briefly after I got my job. I was told that I had gotten selected for the h1b. And I didn't even it's a such a big deal because I was just like well, I just did the job. I felt, since I still had my stem opiates, I had some time and if I didn't get selected, that would be okay. When I got selected, I mean thank god. I mean it took a while for me to even submit all my documents. They kept in the sign up list. Some I submitted maybe a week before or a day before the deadline, but it took a while. I was just so lazy about it. What documents you have to even put together for your job.

Speaker 2:

There were a lot of documents Employee verification and all these transcripts, your certificates, your certificate from university. I think I've uploaded all those too. Just just a I can remember, but I saw I probably uploaded up to 15 documents and then the long employee Form that you see. Yeah, it's right, yeah, but I don't I just don't do so well with forms and all those stuff so well. I'm glad I did so you got in the first time.

Speaker 1:

Me and my. I got into Google March 10 22. So I already missed our first lottery. Then 2023. This year they put it for me. I didn't get it, so I have one more try then, even when they did the second try in July, because oh, yeah, because they didn't know. Yeah, they had people that submitted. I had people submitted a lot of false applications so they read, they shot, did a second round and I sent my email that I still don't get it. So I have one last chance next year.

Speaker 2:

But I'm like if to look, because I didn't know Ellie enough and when I heard about I'm like if to look, got issues I'm told I think you won't bother.

Speaker 1:

I think, get it, but I'm not too wise, fingers crossed. Thankfully, there are other options at Google, to you know, to navigate for work visas anyway. So when you got to one next, then you Scheduled appointment. Nigeria. What did you do?

Speaker 2:

So when I got it it was just I mean, you really don't have to stamp your passport when you. You don't have to stamp the H1B visa on your passport. It's just if the stamping only allows you Multiple entries into the.

Speaker 1:

US.

Speaker 2:

So if you want to travel to other countries, and it's just advisable that you stamp it so that you can always come back to the US without any problems.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, so I didn't plan to do anything about it until this year, when I was just going through a lot, I got emotional trauma and I just wanted to visit my family and spend some time with them. So I think this whole they thought about, so they thought about um traveling Came up in May, I think, and I think I mentioned it to you that same week that I thought about it and so I mentioned to my family that, oh, I want to come home to stamp my visa and also because I mean, since I have the H1B, I might as well just Use the opportunity to travel to other countries and do other nice things. So I said, okay, I will come home with these seats my parents, my siblings so I like that you said do other nice things, because you have been begging when Boosie to use her money.

Speaker 1:

Thankfully, we finally moved out Of our auntie's house and moved into our own place in New Jersey. We're grateful now she has been. She has been traveling the world. She was in Puerto Rico recently. Give us some Spanish words. What can you say? Give us some Spanish words. What can you say?

Speaker 2:

I don't know, how are you?

Speaker 1:

I'm so proud of. You See, even now. She came to my house with a coach bag on her arms. I'm so here for it. Yes, I love to see you using your money. And then he continued and he told your family yeah, and they were um, they were not so Happy with the idea.

Speaker 2:

I mean, I think they were worried because of the insecurity In Nigeria and they were like, oh, we're not sure this is a good idea. But I was adamant on Traveling. So my yes, my dad just said well, we'll pray about it. I mean, they kept having I don't know, for they had. They had a lot of push, there were lots of pushbacks, and I say with me.

Speaker 1:

So when I went, when I was going for my sister's wedding to my dad, will say what if before the elections they locked down Nigeria? You can't come back? I said I will stay there because I must not be missing my sister's wedding pictures and nothing can happen. You know, and that's what kept telling me, that nothing will happen. Don't worry that. They're probably just scared, that I understand.

Speaker 2:

They kept saying like oh, we're having dreams, we're feeling this way. I think I tried became so worrisome and I remember I was actually getting so scared that am I going to die or do you? On my way to Nigeria. But I don't know, you have to stay in stamp they put a lot of feign or you don't have to stamp it in Nigeria Like you don't.

Speaker 1:

If you don't plan to travel out of the US. Oh, why did you choose Nigeria? Okay, because you also wanted to go home.

Speaker 2:

Exactly so. I think the only option was Canada, and Canada was giving me 2024. That's next year, april next year, and I don't want to wait till next year before.

Speaker 1:

I don't think that I can go to Mexico anymore.

Speaker 2:

I think that's very risky, but he got it Well.

Speaker 1:

Mexico I think they've stopped Mexico, oh so you go to the US embassy in that country to stamp you of this? Yeah, I mean, they advised.

Speaker 2:

For you to go to the embassy where you, your home country is, your home country where you had most of your education. Oh, okay, okay, awesome. I was going to take the risk with Canada, but they were not giving an edit, so what did?

Speaker 2:

you get in Nigeria, so from Nigeria. I mean, when I checked I think I started checking In july, in june, and I got like I saw some. I got I saw a date for like july 4th, but that was too early for me, I had not told my manager, I had not told all the people that needed to know about it.

Speaker 2:

And then I mean it's like I would have had to get an expensive ticket because, yeah, it was yes, exactly, so I just decided to go with some did you have to feel the DS 160 all over again? Yes, yes, I did. I feel the DS 160. Yes, I did and I.

Speaker 1:

Then you got a date in august. August I got july 25th. I knew that would be your travel day. I didn't know what?

Speaker 2:

July 25th, which was like two days after I got home. Okay, so I just went because I didn't. I was going to stay at home for two or three weeks and I didn't want to have any delays with coming back home.

Speaker 1:

Yeah so I also want to find out what is like going back to Nigeria. I strive for Nigerians that is during summer. I don't think we have any. We have get it is ever, but I don't know what they call summers in.

Speaker 2:

Nigeria so.

Speaker 1:

Well, before we get, I'll come back to it. How was interview process? That was so. One question today asks you, so let me start.

Speaker 2:

So I had it in Lagos and, sadly, when I was filming my DS160 and uploading my documents, I didn't have my passports. I didn't upload my passports, did not meet the requirements. So they just stated that you should bring your passports and I took two copies, but when I got there they said, oh no, you should have uploaded it you cannot just staple it to the documents. So I mean those people also. I felt like they wanted to scam me, but at that point me I already had that.

Speaker 2:

So those people you met outside there, but exactly, I don't have I don't have exactly, and me I just like I don't want anything to stop me from getting this visa. So you listen to them. Yeah, I actually listen to them. So what they now do, jjc like me. So then they took me. Oh, my god.

Speaker 1:

For some reason.

Speaker 2:

They took me to one place and they were like oh, you have to refuel the DS160, so they were like oh, we have to print, we have to upload your passports, and then, thankfully, I.

Speaker 2:

So the day before my visa interview, I took my passports and then asked for the soft digital copy, so they sent it to my email. Thankfully I didn't have to like take another passports there in VI, but so I had to. They had to upload their passports. How did they go back to me? I don't know how they do those people, they have their ways but they went back to my application, they uploaded my stuff and then they had to change. So because so there are two different documents that have your back hood and so since I had changed, since I had uploaded my passports, my back would, for the other one, change, for one document change. So we had to now do the same thing. We had to change the back hood for the other documents. So it meant me paying for different for them, for them working on the different documents. At the end I paid about 50 000 naira.

Speaker 1:

I was so mad.

Speaker 2:

I saw you did not, and even so I also did not even have my bank.

Speaker 1:

I think the receipt Wait now, 50 000 naira to put into perspective me like 50 dollars. That's like 50 dollars right now.

Speaker 2:

I mean for me. I planned to spend. I didn't have, like I didn't really have a limit, so it was not the money was not the problem, but I knew that they were.

Speaker 1:

Wow, I knew money was not a problem.

Speaker 2:

God, I see what you're doing in life of my friends continue, but it was annoying that they were taking advantage of me because I could sense that you do not know they could sound like that. I'm not wearing an extra space you too.

Speaker 1:

Why don't you even come down or call somebody and be like so? Why do you just like them?

Speaker 2:

I would just like I didn't want. I had just two weeks, my colleague my colleague that traveled was delayed for like a month. He could not. He went to India to do um, to get into H1P stands, and he could not come back early enough. So, like he, um, even his work was on pause for a while and I didn't want to go through that. I'm like whatever it takes to just do whatever it takes to just do these things, to do it.

Speaker 1:

So why did you just go to the front of the embassy? They usually have staff there. Why didn't you go and confirm? Sir, am I supposed to attach my passport? You just allow those boys and I know where they stay they are that red gate, the sand place before you cross into the embassy one time I started and they just kept going and going.

Speaker 2:

At that point I actually didn't even see the price list until later. And then I just started in like 10k, 15 and they tried to even add like 5k extra and I'm like, no, you think I'm a fool because I've been keeping quiet since I'm not going to pay. This is not 50, 5k, this is 50. And then when I was about to pay the restitution you pay for purest, I said if you're not ready to do this you forgot about it I'm going into it, I love that and then I pay them their money and I went to the inside the event.

Speaker 2:

Yes, I went into the embassy so the the guy asked me what I do and I said oh, I'm a business analyst. He said when did I graduate? I told him I graduated 2021 and I've been working since then. And he asked me um what company I work for. I told him I mentioned my company. He asked if I've been homes since I graduated. I said no. He said you know, this is not what you know. That is not the right way to go about it and.

Speaker 1:

I said well, when you did your first F1 interview, they actually asked you to come back home. Yeah, I didn't get that question. I was like go leave the F1's question with Pio.

Speaker 2:

Mata, I don't think I don't know how to answer it. I don't think I prepared for it, but they didn't ask me that yes, I was like go.

Speaker 1:

What am I going to say if they actually asked me to go and come back?

Speaker 2:

home. They didn't ask me that. So I so, when you're like, oh, but you've not been home, why, why is that? And I said, well, I've just been busy working my address, gave him some story, and he just said, okay and um, yeah, I think that was all they asked me. They didn't ask me a lot of questions.

Speaker 2:

And then they not said you were through it and so yeah, and so they just took the passport, or, like he just kept it and I think he gave me the blue form or something, I don't remember. But he gave me something and said okay, you pick it up in two or three days, okay that was it.

Speaker 1:

Oh, and when did that come out?

Speaker 2:

August, like it came out two days after, two working days after oh, okay, wow, so you see other people getting rejected.

Speaker 1:

I mean, you won't know, it's okay, so for each one.

Speaker 2:

I didn't see other people getting rejected, just to then to this F1 that I saw them get rejected oh my god, he actually told you that. You know, this is not the plan yeah, oh my god, I'm sure he has seen a lot of people that so what was the answer? Again, you said that you couldn't really have time to come home. I just, yes, I said, well, I didn't have the opportunity, I started working in the Dicln okay, okay, okay.

Speaker 1:

What if you had not said but you were never supposed to get job? What were you not saying?

Speaker 2:

I was actually at that point. I was already cowbashed. I said look, oh. But I was very confident and like I you know you have to be confident.

Speaker 1:

Look at them did you do any more interviews before you went?

Speaker 2:

actually, oh, yeah, so my, my employer, um, had okay, an interview prep with me denied before. Okay, I mean, they made me feel confident enough. I was saying you already have this thing. Yeah, there's a very low probability that you have any problems, so you just go there knowing that you've gotten it. Oh, I see, it's true, they already approved it from the US, okay, okay, I'm ready and proved it from the US.

Speaker 1:

I remember that if I get mine, when you get it, if, if you have to prepare for the worst, anyway, okay, next question so what would you say when the nice things are going back home during summer? I know you told me about your issue with a driver. I know you're. It's true, they also treated her like a queen higher driver for her and her or I pay for all of that shopping where you are going to buy gift to take to your family.

Speaker 1:

So was it grand coming back home? Yeah, it was, because that was my first time visiting in three years since I came to DUS.

Speaker 2:

It was nice. I mean, my mom didn't want me to come in July, she wanted me to come. She wanted me to visit in December because she was like, oh nice, more people will be around.

Speaker 1:

Your friends will be around in December.

Speaker 2:

December is a nice time. There are things happening there, but um July, nothing's really happening. Your friends are not there and all of that. But I mean I just wanted, I just didn't want to wait for that long to visit, so I said it doesn't matter.

Speaker 1:

Would you say that going home helped your emotional trauma?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, just when it wasn't in the. It was both yeah, but so it helped me think about other things aside, what was stressing me out here, and I mean just the joy that came with seeing my siblings and my parents. It was good. I mean, I was stressed out and I was just like oh, I mean, no, you know, we don't have power outage.

Speaker 1:

I mean, there's power outage in Nigeria.

Speaker 2:

Oh yeah, so we had no, so things like we had the gen, so I already made provision. Power generator for London and the traffic here, and the traffic was not that bad, I mean, I didn't go out, so so much. So I mean my, just my mom being a mom and just doing some things that I thought we left behind.

Speaker 1:

Why did they go?

Speaker 2:

I'm like mom, are you still doing this? And like we had like maybe one or two arguments and I was just like, nah, I just I didn't come home to be stressed or to get upset, I just wanted some peace, I just wanted to be happy, and I invested so much in this trip to now come and how much did you do?

Speaker 1:

How much, on average, did you spend in dollars going home? Everything Minus flat tickets, minus, yeah, minus. Like how much did you spend while you were in Nigeria? When I was in?

Speaker 2:

Nigeria. I spent I think I spent up to one K One thousand dollars and it's just like it's two weeks trip. Yeah, I spent up to one K.

Speaker 1:

I think I spent one, five and I spent a month. I didn't go out too much too.

Speaker 2:

I spent twenty Minus wedding expenses.

Speaker 1:

But yeah, the flat ticket was like how much Two K To one come during summer and you booked it in less than three months. Yes, I booked it like maybe a month or six weeks before. You can't say it's not cheap because people who book far out get it for that amount. I think.

Speaker 2:

And then, like the gifts and everything I spent without, I think everything amounted to about four thousand Four thousand.

Speaker 1:

Or like three, five or four K Wow, and if you haven't, okay, last time I converted to Nigeria, but anyway, but, okay and then would you think, like in my own house now, when I went home in December, I still had to go for money devotion, although my phone and all this time. I spent. They didn't force me to go to church. I even woke up and I saw that they had left me. I said, wow, is this what?

Speaker 2:

you mean I remember, I remember, I said they didn't force me to go to church.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, they. My father asked me to take me to CCI Reboot Camp, and then I also noticed that when it was time to cook they would not look for me.

Speaker 2:

Oh, that one, that one, yeah, that one. I love it. I didn't have to watch any play. I'm sorry, my mom was okay serving me.

Speaker 1:

I'm like I'm fine, people make me to. They kept me in the so our AC in my in the girls' room upstairs wasn't working. One of my sisters are split To me. My sisters are split between two rooms. I sleep with the younger ones and they take me and treat me to sleep in the other room, so the AC is not working one of them. They not kept me in the visitors room. They are cleaned it. My sister, they won't. I have a painting from my baby sister. I used to have it on my wall that welcome home. They put Hulandia for me and you know they are like it, I was like oh okay, my mom got me all to water.

Speaker 2:

So I go, and we've done all of this for you.

Speaker 1:

Show us your house, oh, yes, oh, I actually wanted to.

Speaker 2:

I actually looked forward to praying with my, because I like praying with my dad. My dad's a pastor and I mean, it's prayed for me, guys.

Speaker 1:

My prayers are working. They are working, hallelujah. So.

Speaker 2:

I actually looked forward to praying together and going to church, like if, in fact, I'm like, oh dad, when are we going for prayer meeting? And all of this. I just missed that vibe. I missed because it's just different here, like the prayer meetings here are not, I don't know, it just feels different. Anyways, I just wanted all of that.

Speaker 1:

I wanted this. Just praise and watch. I went to, I went to.

Speaker 2:

So my dad was most another church and when I went there I had not met those people before it was they really welcomed me. They were so happy, like oh, we've heard so many things about you, finally we're meeting you. I want to do the attempt. First question for church what's your position? I'm a whole. Just praise the Savior. Just praise the baptized. I'm the Holy Spirit, great physician and some coming king, say it for your people.

Speaker 2:

So my yeah, so they were all welcoming, so happy to see me, so it was good. And then I mean the last I didn't even have clothes.

Speaker 1:

I don't think I planned my triple Like it was, I think it was the day, because I want to say that he went to hear that bassist's restaurant.

Speaker 2:

I was like what is?

Speaker 1:

this. He was wearing it to a whole Guinness world record that was in the time for my visa interview.

Speaker 2:

Okay, so that was the outfitted word to the interview.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, you look so stressed. I hear the face cap on.

Speaker 2:

I said after that day you did not have a face cap, the day I went to hear that bassist.

Speaker 1:

My mom is sad to me. I said after the tea and sleigh, I actually did not plan my outfitted. I thought you were going to go to bed. You have to pee.

Speaker 2:

There were some things I planned to wear. I did not even wear them, I just brought everything back. I don't know.

Speaker 1:

I feel like Maybe it's because there was nobody to see, maybe that's, I don't know, no, old friends. It's actually crazy. It's actually Shubhomiya.

Speaker 2:

I saw.

Speaker 1:

Okay, that's true. It's crazy that we don't have old friends anymore.

Speaker 2:

So I didn't have like church outfit. I started looking for words to wear and then when I brought out so I think I had three Sundays in church, is it two Sundays, I think three, maybe just I don't remember. But this Sunday before I left, I didn't have anything to wear and I had this sleeveless dress and my dad said oh, don't you want to wear jackets? I said I don't have any jackets. I mean here in the US I don't need to wear jackets. I mean going to church with these dresses.

Speaker 1:

Is this a day of sports? You have changed. No, no, he didn't say that.

Speaker 2:

He just said, okay, maybe your mom will have one for you. My mom and I are the same size. Yeah, my mom was like what does that mean? Please, you don't need any jackets.

Speaker 1:

Oh, I love that my mom was fighting for me, but because I'm an understanding child.

Speaker 2:

I didn't want, I just want to look for a scarf that I wrapped around my shoulder. My mom was like I don't like the way I dress, you're not giving it to us this, and that I just wanted to wear it.

Speaker 1:

Even when I brought on my red wig because I had asked my started opening by week five cape, my mom not say, ah, which one? Is this one again? I mean I don't need to tie a scarf to anybody, Even since we're children. They used to beat me for always removing my hat.

Speaker 1:

I used to remove my hat and then I would put capris on and biscuit that they gave us in time, because my own family. You have to bring it back to the house to show them that this is what they give you in church. So anyway, so yeah, I don't even want to send anybody. But another question so would you say that your family build you? Okay, not your family Like other people build you, like where they always ask me what sister boots, say what do you bring for? Oh, no, no, no.

Speaker 2:

I feel like I plan for everyone. I mean every person that I knew I was going to miss, like my dad, even the church members I bought but somebody works cream for them and for maybe some adults that I knew I was going to buy stuff for them. So I think I planned to give something to everyone and I didn't meet so many people Honest, I didn't meet so many people.

Speaker 1:

My parents were trying to protect me and not make me go out to much, of meet so many people and would you say you will also tip people when you went to all these restaurants? I'm not, my size is in South America, so when I went to wash my hair, but the tip was not a lot.

Speaker 2:

When I went to wash my hair I think it was like 500, maybe 1k to wash hair. Okay, because they did some, they put some stuff and I gave her 500 a tip. She saw me another day on the road. I said thank you so much for that.

Speaker 1:

No, no, no, I know I remember then I had sprayed so much more, I had withdrawn so much money to spray at my stars wedding, so I still had new notes. So I remember one time I would go out or when I took my stars restaurant, I would leave like maybe two, five more and I would note in the waiters to tip them. I was going to bless them. I was blessing them. My staff kept saying what are you doing Like? What is this Like? When all this will start, that's what they do. That's special for this thing and it's funny that because actually now it makes so it's not safe. We actually don't want to tip in the US, we just feel like they should end it. I think maybe that's my wish.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, exactly, and I mean here you can just if you tip them like three dollars.

Speaker 1:

they are looking at you like what are you giving them, so they are expecting to tip like 10, 15, 20.

Speaker 2:

10, 15, exactly. And like my food is already expensive, exactly, but I think my start tipping all of these bills is like entering on the show.

Speaker 1:

And I'm tipping 1000 in comparison to how much I spend.

Speaker 2:

Exactly Like 100K, 80k exactly. So yeah, they are still so grateful. Anyway. But the plan was to like visit a lot of restaurants, eat all the nice things at the same time Do you still go to school.

Speaker 1:

Nice, to send your ghost, I sent all those places.

Speaker 2:

But so you know, I lost my, like I didn't have my driver anymore after.

Speaker 1:

I was weak. Oh, okay, so.

Speaker 2:

I was like I had a driver, that's so. I wanted to be comfortable and I didn't want to, because I know my mom is quite protective and she was like, oh, if you want to go out, then you will need to have a driver to around, exactly Because she didn't want to leave me with Uber or to Uber. So I had the driver, but after some days he just said, oh, he had other appointments to deal with.

Speaker 1:

To Uber driver shouldn't be the best.

Speaker 2:

But I was able to complete myself. I learned how to drive because you did. Yes, I went to driving school.

Speaker 1:

So the driver took me.

Speaker 2:

License for your kids. I only went for 10 days and I think I don't need 6 practical lessons and 4 theoretical lessons.

Speaker 1:

You do manual lessons before the automatic lessons no, I didn't learn manual lessons.

Speaker 2:

I'm not interested.

Speaker 1:

Even that 6 lessons was the day before.

Speaker 2:

I think that was the relationship that went to the island. So I didn't even my mind was not there.

Speaker 1:

I see, do you know when I even did mine? I got my license in February. I did my clutch lessons automatic, but I couldn't drive anymore. So I don't think I still have it in me to learn to drive anymore.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and I thought, okay, so, because there were like 3 different drivers that taught me and one kept saying it was not to drive. I said, please, I just want to learn the basics, so then I go back, my friend will teach me. So, the plan was to return here and my friend will teach me how to drive. I don't know what I yet to learn, but I'm hoping that the plan was to get my driver to do the test and get license.

Speaker 1:

Do you plan to get a car in New Jersey soon?

Speaker 2:

No, I don't plan to drive in New Jersey. I just didn't see the need. I feel like I'm not going to maximize the car, that you have to be back for it every month. And if I'm driving, if I'm using trains to work, why do I need a car? I only need a car to do road trips or drive during the weekend.

Speaker 1:

Or groceries, go to church, and I feel like that's another level of adulthood we need to unlock. Maybe we need to give the city Like to be able to drive to place it. Like not be dependent on the train that's to our trip. It's also Exactly, it's the quality of my life.

Speaker 2:

Sometimes, when I'm going to work and I see that this is a one-hour 30 minutes commute with public transport, if I'm driving to one hour I don't know why I want to stress myself. I don't know why I want to stress myself, just to stay awake.

Speaker 1:

I think there are still more threats and sometimes when I'm driving.

Speaker 2:

If I'm on the train I'm able to sleep and just wait to get to my stop, but if I'm driving I have to be attentive the whole time. I don't know For me, I would just rather use public transport to work. But you know, I'm also considering moving to Texas.

Speaker 1:

Okay, she's telling the folks I love you, thanks I once.

Speaker 2:

Or twice considered moving to Texas.

Speaker 1:

When Texas.

Speaker 2:

I had a dollar, so he'll stay. So if I moved to Texas, I know I'll need to drive, which was why I decided to learn how to drive and also get my license Not because I do not plan to get a car in New Jersey.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, mr Farid even know what I think about getting a car yet, because I'm still in New York.

Speaker 2:

But and I also don't think I will enjoy driving that much. So if I really don't want to drive, I don't want to drive.

Speaker 1:

Okay, well, I guess those are all my questions. I think I also had just to share about my ongoing this is the end of my share plan to go to Texas and we're not going back home. I don't really have any plans. I want to do a couple of my trips to Nigeria post-reals from my sister's wedding, hopefully if I get around to it any way.

Speaker 2:

But you never had a podcast when you traveled back home, did you Like?

Speaker 1:

I didn't post any episodes no, no, I did not. So this is me also sharing my own experience, I think, for me, my worst experience. Even Ubers, they will be telling me please, ma, we need cash, we are not taking a card trip. I'm like, what's this? I'm like, where do you want to get your car from? We're enjoying almost every day.

Speaker 2:

It's still a. Things are so expensive. When I rent, things are so expensive.

Speaker 2:

I'm like I think it's because I actually, when I went, when I returned to the US, I had to call one or two people that I know support their families and I told them that oh, I think you need to increase how much you are sending home because things are really expensive. So if you think $150 or $200 is doing a lot, it's really not doing so much Because, like I was spending how much every day, like the first day I went I only went to get maybe mouthwash and some toiletries, and I spent how much at Shoprite? Like I just got very few items but I spent too much. And like even going to eat or just a loaf of bread, being one thousand, there are things that are like triple in price.

Speaker 1:

And when I went, actually it was like 700? 700 and something. And the first time I changed money and I saw like one million accounts, I was like, wow, I don't have my whole Wow, I've never seen this amount in my account before, even before I left Nigeria, I think. Well, I mean I did, but I used to always move my money. You were saving, I was saving, so obviously that's the savings account, but not in an account where I'm going to be spending from. So of course, it felt good. But even one day I went to supermarket. I went to go and buy soup at some and then some other biscuits and I think I'm seeking to pick lemon or something instead of vanilla. And I went to go and exchange and the woman looked at me and said in PG, she said you look like, say you'd be one of these IGGBs when you think, say you'd be you better, look, well, you know. Fair exchange for this place.

Speaker 2:

Fair exchange.

Speaker 1:

Yes, actually me too. I was thinking that I could exchange when would you? Exchange. Have you gone home? No, but paid for it. Then I got what if?

Speaker 2:

I exchange.

Speaker 1:

I was like, please, can I actually I think I wanted to refund it, not even exchange it's a favor. And the woman said that you wish you would say the reason you're angry. But she said that, Wait, can you remember where you are? You cannot roof on it. It was even hilarious to me that I forgot to be angry. What's so funny? But anyway, I think for me, I think going home was fun until after like two weeks, after two weeks After my sister's wedding, okay, no, first you can came.

Speaker 1:

We all say I won't, me and my sevens gonna draw my nails. You know I was taking my sisters out with this manicure pedicure. After that one week that my father will go out to you, back to you, from see a bistro inspire. You come back and say I bought this for you because I knew he likes to hear he came. What Turkey for me. They always buy me all my favorite, my shortbread, all these my favorite things. I was like, hey, you want me to come back home every month After two weeks by, after Christmas, even Christmas my mom was asking me that I want you make jello fries for I got to London and it's a man night. I remember that my father, if he said he was looking for me Like I was a child that not come home. So when you're queuing out, you know he queued so long he was just looking for me, he was not telling one guy that's my daughter.

Speaker 2:

That's my daughter.

Speaker 1:

I think I'm crying. I was like, oh my god, I'm crying. I'm like you guys. Even if my mom had a project that should have followed, my dad's come pick me, but she needed to be home. They won't ask me what I want to do. I know it was really beautiful.

Speaker 2:

Everyone, everyone was awake and I got somebody. Like almost 2 am, I got somebody who my one, my dad, my mom and the driver came to speak me up. And then my sister, my brother way awake and my sister just kept looking at me. She kept saying once you hugged, and then I hugged. I said that hug is not enough. Don't you miss. Everything was me.

Speaker 1:

I kept touching my sister's eyes. You're trying to touch me, you, my baby's eyes, like a nice little bit you in guest room tonight? No, it was. It was very beautiful, I think. I eventually cried and it was like okay. My mom was like no, you don't have to open your boxes. I know you brought a lot of things. I had extra. I paid for extra. Sure, you follow me today for daddy and pay for extra no game just go out.

Speaker 1:

She doesn't know, you don't have to go out and you still pay for over You're not just over, I see, other than all the Christmas gifts, you know. So anyway, but yeah, it was. It was definitely a beautiful film after that Christmas Everyone, when I went for cheeky's concert. So my parents gave me the driver that day to to go to take me because, you know, they said that Uber can kidnap me, that there's not book or not. This excuse is that they always give us, so do you the drivers that it was a whole dish. I said to the man and give him food and give him one K, like I was in 2k seven said to them Thank you for staying with us the whole day. They're my parents daily they were. I was like I was telling my sister I they're not calling us. Maybe they're not because usually, pre coming to this country, my coffee was 8 pm, my I was 7, even though I came home at 10. My mom punished me.

Speaker 2:

My mom punished me. She almost beat me Like my sister was actually crying and said mommy, please, please this slap my family gave me inside the house.

Speaker 1:

As soon as your instagram house cannot come back.

Speaker 2:

My mom told me, frog jump different things. She actually.

Speaker 1:

She actually said she was angry, that's enough.

Speaker 1:

I'm not even, just in case you don't know. See, we're laughing at you, but this is actual trauma, oh my god. So what do you think about this? If you're not Nigerian in, my mom probably don't understand. You Probably think that my friends should be in jail. Bro, that's the life we live, though. So, shad, you want to call me man? You should have seen me. My sister anxiety, and she can't not come out until like 11. Shad, I think my friends were just like let's see what this our children will do. So at the end of the day, we came back with the driver round to one Around here, with our heart in our throat and in our mouth.

Speaker 2:

We opened the door, my mom and funny no usually my father is angry, but I think my father no, just me and Titi.

Speaker 1:

I think my father actually Spectated me even when I came. We was not really demanding that I knew them, because mom house, we, I knew Lord two years to greet them and all those things in here. So my mom, I knew that if I don't just shoot them and I say, because you have a job, I go what? She would tell you that what happened to your two years that you cannot. So I said I'll still be kneeling down If I hear a voice.

Speaker 2:

I'm ready.

Speaker 1:

On your son, I'm gonna show up on the door I'm, I'm, I'm ready to lean to get up.

Speaker 1:

But, anyway, I came. We came up from that ticket concert. That's some of the acts. My mother asked me to come to the follow. I wasn't waiting for a friend to come and start shout out. I was like what can this show that I've known? Eventually he now said what are you? Why are you late? You don't know how to enjoy it. My mother not started that why we will come back around this time. That, what ungodly activity did you go for that?

Speaker 1:

I mean my mom, like this was said, you're insulting you. Look at me fully dressed. I'm like I even went with a sling bag, so it's not safe. I packed extra clothes, all right. I went to go and do a shower walk.

Speaker 2:

Plus, I went to my younger Exactly.

Speaker 1:

It's actually you saw insults and has anything about, and that's when I started keeping quiet because that that thing actually pissed me off, even though I was expecting it, but I was hoping they would not, do you get? It actually pissed me off Even though we also went out. I went for my sisters to go, so went to have dinner. They were just calling and calling and calling, as it is what this is. It's so embarrassing. Remember one time that if you think that's how you, that's what you see doing in New York, you cannot do it in this house, so that if you want to stay, if you when you can stay out late past midnight it has what you want.

Speaker 1:

I'm like midnight at my stay, even even here, when it's 11. I'm already tired that I want to be going to my house. What can people just trust? The daughter that you've raised? But that's another conversation for another day. Let's never go there, my god. Anyone advice when you want going home to to renew their travel, their hate from you this time?

Speaker 2:

What would you be in general, money and, naturally, family wise, be prepared for everything, for all the billings, for all all the expensive stuff you are going to, yeah, purchase, and just for all the people that will get your upsets, just be prepared for everything and try to have fun. I mean, I'm glad that I did not allow the and nine times ruin the whole experience. I still tried to be happy and just even though my mom was like, oh, you cannot do this. So when my driver left I could not go to the island or do other things.

Speaker 1:

But I mean thank you for helping me bring my stuff.

Speaker 2:

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. She will make him to pick me up. So I still tried to just Stay happy until I left and I mean I'm not going back to you Hopefully maybe two years I mean, I don't know God's plans but left me. I wouldn't want to go back next day because I just need a break my mom. From going home for two weeks. Let the love just be online. What's?

Speaker 1:

up and even though they say the best relationship with your Parents is love.

Speaker 2:

Treating me so special when I'm away, but when I'm there, you're ready to start to insult Like what is up.

Speaker 1:

I know, even my even Honestly, I remember, and that day, even when I entered the restaurant because I'm a good person, I won't still brought food for them Even myself was saying that maybe they were jealous that I'm not take them out. And actually I was trying to take them out for new years, like my own parents. But that thing that you did, that shouting, that they shouted, I vexed. I said I'm not even I was moving, I was. I came back to the us On January 7th. I even wanted to come back January 2nd. I was going to move my flight.

Speaker 2:

I knew that the main things more. Somehow I just said now just my, it's just not like they killed me anything. Yeah, I'm just right now.

Speaker 1:

You're right, I'm just my image and but please, I was me too. I was really happy with time I spent my sister's even myself that was getting married. Then I remember when she eventually left, I was like, so you mean his only one week I'll see you already going to husband's house. I can't he tell you to wait till the end of the year? He don't know like is that how he works, that you marry. And immediately it was so sad I felt like I hadn't really seen her for a while. You know, although I at least I'm happy that I went out with her time with Tammy. Then my younger sister is my baby sister now.

Speaker 1:

I remember some nights she would come and say that she wants to stay with me. I'm like I'm walking because I have to keep walking from the us, you know, but I miss the day. I wish I never even sent out because now I miss them. You know so much. Even this year my mom was like I want you come. That why do you put like acting like you don't like us? I said no, it's not like we don't like you people, I don't like the house. But I need a break and to now start thinking of how to spend another 3k.

Speaker 2:

I was going to that and then to go home for only one week Exactly the investment that goes into it for like a week or two weeks, and then At some point I felt like I wasted a lot of money because I was like I was regretting the trip at some point, but I'm still glad I got to see everyone.

Speaker 1:

Me too. Me too, I'm still. Yeah, it definitely said that one's really important. Yes, and I'm happy too. I thank God for provision. I remember I had a whole list, almost even a book, of all the people I wanted to give to me in charge, and I'm happy I was able to give them, even if it was live In my box.

Speaker 2:

I had like a full box even like one and a half. So like even my, I didn't have it that I didn't have a lot of clothes. I'm trying to impact a lot of clothes. I didn't have space to take clothes, almost I think almost two boxes, one for my family, then, like for people also. So just, but yeah well.

Speaker 1:

I guess they're just still go home but prepare or spend shorter time. I think after two weeks the wine begins to get sour.

Speaker 2:

You know something like this we guys begins to turn sour up to some point.

Speaker 1:

Like you know what I was talking about. I was just staying in my room like I'm like nobody come and look for me. I would always tell them that I'm working, I'm online like please, you know. And also there's something my dad did, I remember. You know everybody just says, oh, she walked out Google that. Where do you walk? You know, my father said me that I really wanted to know what I did at Google, what I did for them, and I thought I thought that was one of the highlights of my trip for some weird years. Actually, I just felt like, wow, he was actually very interested. He wanted to know so what are your career growth patterns? I mean my mom too. I mean she acts is, but you know, doing my dad act was was very deep. And then when they saw me off to the airport, of course I still cried. You know both of them.

Speaker 2:

Some of them are too arid. I wish I did too. You're really ready to go. So that day again my mom and I were having some issues. Yes, so I was just like nah, I'm out of here. Oh, my god, I also not feeling too good.

Speaker 1:

I had some yeah yeah, I mean I was. I was grateful that, you know, and it made me realize that, wow, I was going back to my new home in New York. You know that, wow, I'm never gonna be for you. I remember both of my parents send me off. It's like you're don't, you're returning to school, they're dropping off at school. But they were actually dropping me off to go back to my actual life I was like that.

Speaker 1:

I think it doesn't really don't mean that, okay, I'm not one of those women in their Late 20s that live alone or have left their parents houses that we used to look at and live with them married.

Speaker 2:

That's not me, that's not.

Speaker 1:

You know. So yeah, of course it was. It was beautiful, I think me, I know, I think the same advice I have, if I had any advice, to do what you said to definitely be prepared and maybe Spend short-time, I mean, but who am I telling how much time spends their family or cost budget to all? And then, if you have friends to see, you should actually plant out. I wish I planned that more often Because a lot of people were actually around At least. I shout out to all my cost mates who came for my sister's wedding you know they were all there to celebrate, but I wish I planned to see People more and actually spend more time with them. And I feel like when you go, people expect you to always pick up the bill, which is nice, oh, I actually can I for everyone that went to sit I did that I.

Speaker 2:

Why are you doing so? I remember she boomers on the bill was actually a lot daddy, because she also didn't have her Document, her card document. So before this stopped us and we had to pay, like so a lot of yes. So I had to pay and I felt but I see why you say we prepared. Yeah, she came to pick me and I just I was just like, okay, I'm just gonna pay. But I already planned that whoever I was going to sell it, I was going to pay because I feel like in Nigeria.

Speaker 2:

I mean even, even people that are doing well. They are still trying to manage their finances. I feel, like for me, because I any dollars and when I come back, I didn't think of it like that too, and I also felt like I was spending in Nigeria and I ran with a budget.

Speaker 1:

I was like I can't.

Speaker 2:

I'm not changing more than that. I had a budget too.

Speaker 1:

I'm just. I'm just. I brought money from you to book my first leg of the flight because I was still I had just um Started looking, actually had not started work, but I think it's rent. I hadn't really balanced how I was going to do my finances. So I was like, okay, I'm expecting this money. I didn't want to remove some from some savings. Okay, let me ask. And then, and thank you to for giving me. So at that point I was like I need to keep money for my January rents that was coming.

Speaker 2:

I.

Speaker 1:

But I was like I cannot. Every money was budgeted for and I felt like if you were doing well in Nigeria, you have to afford the oatmeal. I'm well, you're right, I should have paid, because I paid for my house.

Speaker 2:

Okay for me right now, so I want to spend time with you.

Speaker 1:

I know this, I'm even my mother to tell me that miracles are getting to me, even the way, even when you Really I'll be bringing stuff. And I was like when will I put it? Like I was already bringing all my? I know me, I took so many clothes and I'd never have space come back and I already brought more things. She's like no, that's not an endurance. Behave that you still. I know. Answer she's not to me, that you're becoming like all this. Um, I'm very okay, no offense to anybody's nationality, but that you're supposed to be this. You're supposed to be that. We are. Maybe next I remember to pick up people's bills, I mean, but yeah no offense, sorry.
